Alex Cook is a composer, producer, musician, studio engineer and lecturer, living in Todmorden, UK.
Alex received a first class honours degree at the School of Sound Recording and was awarded a distinction for his MusM in Composition (Electroacoustic Music and Interactive Media) at Novars Center for Musical Research at the University of Manchester.
He explores how spoken narrative and electro-acoustic art can communicate ideas and explore the continuum between the metaphorical and the literal. His research explores Stockhausen's use of superformula and moment form to create complexity in long-form composition. His compositional work Six Billion Screams tackles issues concerning environmental catastrophe. It plays as a radio play from a future society trying to communicate to the human race and urge a change in C02 emissions.
His research also involves interactive tools and led to the creation of the Quadraphonic Effects Looper - a virtual instrument created in Max MSP - a 4 track looper and quadraphonic spacialiser. This device was influenced by Stockhausen's Octophonic Effects Generator and uses his theory of space and time models. The Quadraphonic Effects Looper explores the continuum between space and timbre, allows you to explore the delay line continuum, and the continuum between rhythm and pitch.
Alex lectures in various aspects of live sound engineering, studio engineering, mixing and mastering techniques and creative electronic production.
Alex has showcased work at various exhibitions, has produced, mixed and mastered numerous studio albums and has toured as a musician across the UK with experimental band Slow Knife.
